Working with the firm

What to expect when you engage us.

Engaging a lawyer shouldn’t feel like signing a blank cheque toward an unclear destination. Here is how an engagement with the firm actually runs.

The engagement, step by step

The first conversation

The first conversation

An initial consultation to understand your situation, your objective and your constraints. We’ll give you our preliminary view — including, where it’s the honest answer, that you don’t need a lawyer yet, or need a different kind than us.

Scope, in writing

Scope, in writing

Before work begins you receive an engagement letter setting out what we will do, what it will cost or how costs will be calculated, and what we need from you. If the matter changes shape along the way — matters do — the scope is revisited with you, not silently exceeded.

Fees, agreed up front

Fees, agreed up front

Wherever the nature of the work allows, we offer fixed fees for defined stages, so you know the cost of a decision before you make it. Where time-based billing is the honest structure — some disputes and open-ended matters are genuinely unpredictable — we provide estimates, caps where appropriate, and regular reporting so there are no surprises.

Communication you don’t have to chase

Communication you don’t have to chase

You will know who is handling your matter, how to reach them, and where things stand. We translate as we go: our letters and advices are written to be understood the first time, by the person paying for them.

Your documents, your file

Your documents, your file

Your file is yours. Structures, registers, agreements and advices are delivered in a form you can actually use and find again — because a right you can’t locate the paperwork for is a right you’ll pay to reconstruct.

Your other advisers

Working with your accountant and advisers

Much of our best work happens in a working group: your accountant on the numbers, your financial adviser on the strategy, the firm on the law. We are practised at that collaboration and deliberate about staying in our lane — legal advice from us, tax agent and accounting services from your accountant, financial advice from those licensed to give it.

Confidentiality and privilege

What you tell us is protected

Everything you tell us in the course of seeking legal advice is confidential, and communications for the purpose of legal advice attract legal professional privilege — a protection unique to the lawyer-client relationship. We take both seriously, and we’ll explain how privilege works for your matter, including how to avoid losing it.
